Alternative methods for rearing grass-feeding spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) Neotropical Entomology
Peck,Daniel C.; Morales,Anuar; Castro,Ulises.
Two methodologies for rearing grass-feeding spittlebugs are described and were evaluated with Aeneolamia varia (Fabricius) on Brachiaria ruziziensis Germ. & Evrard. To promote biological studies, a new small-scale rearing unit was developed to maintain spittlebug life stages in the greenhouse year round. This unit features a plant tray established with roots as feeding sites for nymphal development alongside an adult emergence cage with plants and oviposition substrate for egg collection. For large-scale production, an improved mass-rearing colony was designed to reduce inputs and streamline production. The major feature was a covered box with root and microclimate conditions adequate for nymphal development. Efficiency of adult production from...

Biology and thermal requirements of Utetheisa ornatrix (L.) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) reared on artificial diet BABT
Signoretti,André Gustavo Corrêa; Nava,Dori Edson; Bento,José Maurício Simões; Parra,José Roberto Postali.
A study on the biology of Utetheisa ornatrix reared on the artificial diet, was conducted to determine the thermal requirements in each development stage. The aim was to find out the thermal regions in the São Paulo state where the pest could develop on Crotalaria spp. The insects were reared on an artificial diet based on the white beans and yeast. U. ornatrix thermal requirements were tested at 18, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, and 32ºC 70±20% RH, and 14-h photophase. Lower threshold temperatures (TT) and thermal constants (K) for the egg, larval and pupal stages were 12.7ºC and 51.2 GDD, 13.5ºC and 290.9 GDD, 13.8ºC and 108.4 GDD, respectively; TT and K values for the biological cycle were 13.8ºC and 436.3 GDD.

Identification of a non-host plant of Xylella fastidiosa to rear healthy sharpshooter vectors Scientia Agricola
Marucci,Rosangela Cristina; Giustolin,Teresinha Augusta; Miranda,Marcelo Pedreira de; Miquelote,Helen; Almeida,Rodrigo Piacentini Paes de; Lopes,João Roberto Spotti.
Rearing leafhopper (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) vectors free of Xylella fastidiosa is a requirement for studies of various aspects of vector-pathogen interactions. The selection of a plant that allows vector development but not bacterial multiplication is desirable to produce healthy vectors. In this study, two leafhopper hosts, Vernonia condensata ('boldo') and Aloysia virgata ('lixeira') were needle inoculated with citrus and coffee strains of X. fastidiosa to evaluate if these plants support pathogen colonization. The inoculated plants did not present symptoms and the pathogen was not detected by culture and PCR tests, neither soon after inoculation (7-14 days) nor later, at 1, 4, 6 and 12 months after inoculation. To obtain healthy adults of the...

New method for rearing Spodoptera frugiperda in laboratory shows that larval cannibalism is not obligatory Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silva,Cherre Sade Bezerra Da; Parra,José Roberto Postali.
New method for rearing Spodoptera frugiperda in laboratory shows that larval cannibalism is not obligatory. Here we show, for the first time, that larvae of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), can be successfully reared in a cohort-based manner with virtually no cannibalism. FAW larvae were reared since the second instar to pupation in rectangular plastic containers containing 40 individuals with a surprisingly ca. 90% larval survivorship. Adult females from the cohort-based method showed fecundity similar to that already reported on literature for larvae reared individually, and fertility higher than 99%, with the advantage of combining economy of time, space and material resources. These findings suggest that the...
